You can’t control the wave

Jan 2, 2023 | General Fitness

As the hustle and bustle of the holidays is ending, I am struck as to how many of us get caught up in the whirlwind of the holidays. I wonder how many truly enjoy their time. It can be hard to be on someone else’s schedule, figuring other’s expectations, and just keeping up with all the extra stuff you have to do to prepare for it! Whew! I’m tired just thinking about it!

It can be a great time however to really practice being in the moment. If you are on someone else’s schedule, then be on that schedule, ride the wave. Be grateful you don’t have to make the decisions!!! You get to just be! Let go of worrying if the kids go to bed late, or if you eat one more piece of dessert, or if you did not get to workout!

Enjoy the moment! You can’t control the wave!

It’s not as easy as one might think all the time. I will be driving the boys and I home from our vacation today and it was fun! We saw a lot of family and were gone for about 10 days. 10 days out of my routine where I normally workout, eat the way I like, meditate, and work on my new studio. Did I struggle some days. Absolutely!

So, I took a little time each day to move a little, meditate (even for 5 minutes), and breathe. It was a great practice of letting go. Something I struggle with to this day! So, I thought I would share the things I did so maybe if you feel the same around the holidays, on trips, or maybe in everyday life, you can find moments of stillness.

We can’t control the wave of life, but we can change the way we approach it!

When things start to feel like a whirlwind, take a breath and remind yourself of three things you are grateful for.

It’s so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holidays and focus on what keeps going wrong. Life is ever flowing.  It’s a wave! When that wave gets crazy and tosses you around, take a moment to remember what you are grateful for!  In those times when we get tossed, we can learn and grow and find small treasures of amazing moments!

Here is another exercise!

1. When you feel the whirlwind, stop. Take a breath and say I feel the whirlwind, but the whirlwind is not me.

2. State three things that are amazing about the moment you are in.

3. If your plans got derailed, state three positive things that came out of the experience.

You can’t change what is happening always, but you can shift your perspective of what is happening and through that shift, a new beauty, joy, and peace can arise.
